Fishing Hut
1-3 guests | 1 bedroom | 2 beds | 1 wc plus separate shower facilitiesVery QUIRKY HIDEAWAY ON THE BANK OF THE BOONDREIGH RIVER. OUR HALF VINTAGE CARAVAN, HALF WILDERNESS CABIN IS PERFECT FOR EMBRACING OFF-GRID LIVING AND CAMPFIRE COOKING.
A stay in the Fishing Hut will be unique – the cabin itself is probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It was built by an artist over 20 years ago with a handmade cabin at one end, and a vintage caravan at the other. We have always thought the cabin was wonderful and we knew we had to bring it back to life. So. we embarked on a pretty major “recycling project”, and we hope you like the result!
The Fishing Hut sits right on the bank of the Boondreigh River, over the bridge from the rest of the Dod Mill collection. You’ll be sharing the field with our rare breed sheep! There are two decks from which you can absorb yourself in the outdoors. You can get to grips with wood fire cooking – either with the Esse Bakeheart stove-cooker inside, or the camp fire pit outside. Heat and light are both renewable. Lighting and charge points are solar powered. Heating is by woodburning stove with logs sourced form the immediate area, and the building has natural insulation.
Short break note: at the weekends, a 2-night stay costs the same as a 3-night stay.
Living, cooking & dining
The wooden part of the cabin houses the Esse Bakeheart stove-cooker, sofa, day bed and also a little reading/study nook. The stove will keep you toasty warm, even on cool nights. We provide unlimited logs to keep it stoked.
The Esse Bakeheart is also your indoor cooker – you can use the hot plate on the top, the oven at the bottom and the fire itself for flame-grilling. Braising, boiling, stewing, simmering, baking, and fire cooking…you can cook whatever you like. For warmer days, you might prefer to cook outdoors on the camp fire. You’ll find a circle of rocks for sitting on, and a fire pit in the middle.
The small kitchen has a cold water tap, cast iron pans, cooking implements, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You’ll have a cool box, but no fridge!
Beds
Wake up to river views from the cosy double bed in the vintage caravan part of the cabin. One thing to remember is that caravans were not traditionally designed for those of us over 6ft tall! We can promise, however, that the new mattress is very comfy and snuggly. We provide gorgeous aubergine bed linen and plenty of extra blankets for cool nights.
You’ll find plenty of space under the double bed to store bags and belongings. There is also a chest of drawers for clothes storage too.
The “master” bed is a small double at 4ft wide and 6ft long. There is an extra single bed in the living area, which doubles up as a sofa. We can provide bedding if required – please ask!
WC and Separate shower
The Fishing Hut has a high tech, eco toilet, accessed from just outside the main entrance to the cabin. It’s a composting loo, but its revolutionary design means no nasty smells and it’s also straightforward to use.
There is no shower at the Fishing Hut itself, but guests can use the shower at the “Wash House”, just a few minutes walk, by the Dod Mill group of buildings. The Wash House also has a flushing toilet, washing machine and tumble dryer should you need one.
Outside
The cabin is set right by the Boondreigh River and it’s the perfect spot for whiling away the days Take a cuppa out to the raised deck on the river side of the cabin, and you’ll likely see wild ducks swimming by. There are loads of other birds to spot too including heron. If you’re really lucky, you might see an otter at dawn or dusk.
The deck on the other side of the cabin catches the evening sun. That’s where you’ll find the fire pit. You’ll also see our rare breed sheep grazing quietly nearby.
