The Times: 10 of the best glamping spots in Scotland

6 Jun 2023

We’re thrilled to share that Dod Mill has been featured in The Times’ “10 of the best glamping spots in Scotland”. In their round-up of exceptional Scottish glamping destinations – from woodland bothies to riverside studios and family-friendly pods – our Fishing Hut and Stilt House were recognised as two of the very best places to experience the great outdoors in Scotland.

To be included alongside some of Scotland’s most acclaimed glamping sites is honestly wonderful, and we’re so proud that both of our unique accommodations made it into this prestigious list.

Two Very Different Glamping Experiences

What makes Dod Mill special is that we offer two completely different glamping experiences, both designed by the wonderful Hen & Crask, both in stunning locations, but each with its own character.

The Fishing Hut is our off-grid adventure option – that hybrid vintage caravan and wooden cabin right on the banks of the Boondreigh River. You sleep in the cosy caravan section with river views from your bed, cook on the wood-fired Esse Bakeheart stove, and spend evenings by the campfire on one of the two decks. It’s perfect for couples who want to properly disconnect and embrace sustainable, off-grid living.

The Stilt House, on the other hand, offers a completely different experience. Built as an artist’s studio over 20 years ago, it’s an architectural gem perched above the ground (hence the name!) and flooded with natural light from its enormous windows. The space is open-plan and contemporary, with a mezzanine sleeping area and those incredible views across the estate. It’s our more luxurious option whilst still maintaining that sense of being immersed in nature.

Glamping in the Scottish Borders

The location is a huge part of what makes glamping at Dod Mill so special. We’re in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders, less than an hour from Edinburgh, yet you feel completely removed from city life. The 1700s water mill sits in its own grounds with the Boondreigh Water running through, surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.

As The Times mentioned, we provide easy access to the Lammermuir Hills – perfect for hiking, cycling, and exploring. The nearby town of Lauder is just four miles away for supplies and pub meals, and we’re within easy reach of the Scottish Borders’ many attractions including historic houses, walking trails, and charming market towns.

From both properties, you can watch wildlife on the river – wild ducks, herons, and if you’re lucky, otters at dawn or dusk. You’ll be sharing the fields with our rare breed sheep, and the only sounds at night are the river and the occasional owl.

Which Glamping Experience Is Right For You?

Both accommodations sleep two people and offer that magical sense of being immersed in the Scottish countryside, but they suit slightly different preferences.

Choose the Fishing Hut if you want an off-grid adventure with wood-fired cooking, a more rustic and intimate experience, and direct access to the riverbank. It’s perfect for those who love the romance of a vintage caravan combined with the practicality of a cabin, and don’t mind embracing the slower pace of off-grid living.

Choose the Stilt House if you prefer a more contemporary space with abundant natural light, architectural interest, and a slightly more luxurious feel whilst still being surrounded by nature. It’s ideal for design lovers who want to feel like they’re staying in something special.

Fishing Hut has a composting loos, with shower facilities in a private Wash House just a short walk away. Stilt House has its own private Wash House with a shower and flushing loo – it’s a very short walk from the cabin. We provide everything you need for a comfortable stay, from bedding and towels to cooking equipment and firewood.

Book Your Scottish Glamping Escape

We’re so proud that The Times recognised both of our properties in their top 10 glamping spots in Scotland. It’s wonderful validation of what we’ve created here at Dod Mill – two very different but equally special ways to experience the Scottish Borders.

Whether you’re drawn to the off-grid charm of the Fishing Hut or the light-filled beauty of the Stilt House, we’d love to welcome you for a glamping escape that’s truly memorable. Come and discover why The Times thinks we’re one of Scotland’s best.
