The Guardian: 10 of Britain’s best vintage caravan stays
10 Aug 2023We’re absolutely thrilled to share that our Fishing Hut has been featured in The Guardian’s “10 of Britain’s best vintage caravan stays”. The Guardian’s introduction perfectly captures why we love what we do: “Here’s why retro caravans with original features and wild surrounds are one of the coolest camping options around.”
When we first rescued this quirky half-cabin, half-vintage-caravan from years of neglect, we knew it was special – but having it recognised as one of the best vintage caravan holidays in the UK is honestly brilliant.
What The Guardian Said About Our “Hybrid Hideaway”
The Guardian described the Fishing Hut as a “hybrid hideaway” in the grounds of a 1700s water mill, on the banks of the Boondreigh. They explained how it works: “One end is a vintage caravan, which houses the bedroom, and the other end is a wooden cabin, containing the living, cooking and dining areas.”
What we particularly loved was how they captured the cosy details. They noted that the cabin has a stove for cooking and heating, a sofa and day bed, and what they called “a little reading nook” – which is exactly what it is! That spot by the window with the river views really is the perfect place to curl up with a book.
The Guardian also highlighted the outdoor space, describing how the property has “two decks: one overlooking the river and one that catches the evening sun and has a fire pit.” These decks are genuinely one of the best features – you can watch the wildlife on the river from one, then move to the other for sunset dinners by the fire.

What Makes This Vintage Caravan Stay Different
The Fishing Hut is genuinely unlike any vintage caravan stay you’ve ever experienced. It was built by an artist over 20 years ago with a handmade wooden cabin at one end and a vintage caravan at the other – we always joke that we’re not sure whether to call it glamping or camping or something in between! The whole structure sits right on the bank of the Boondreigh River, and you’ll be sharing the field with our rare breed sheep.
What really sets this vintage caravan holiday apart is the proper off-grid experience. You sleep in the cosy vintage caravan section (with river views from the bed – honestly, it’s magical), while the cabin part houses your Esse Bakeheart wood-fired cooker. This isn’t just for heating; you can cook everything from slow-cooked stews to flame-grilled dinners. There’s also a campfire pit outside if you fancy cooking under the stars.

A Vintage Caravan Stay in the Scottish Borders
The location is part of what makes this such a special vintage caravan getaway. We’re in the Scottish Borders, less than an hour from Edinburgh, but you feel like you’re miles from anywhere. The Fishing Hut is accessed by walking down some steps, over two bridges, and through a field – so it really does feel like an adventure just getting there.
From the two decks you can watch wild ducks swimming by, spot herons fishing, and if you’re really lucky, catch sight of otters at dawn or dusk. The river can be quite fast-flowing after rain, which adds to the atmosphere – though it does mean this vintage caravan stay is best suited to older children and adults rather than tiny ones.

Off-Grid Vintage Caravan Living
Everything about the Fishing Hut is designed around sustainable, off-grid living. The lighting and charge points are solar powered (we ask guests to use them sparingly to make sure they don’t run out!). Heating comes from the woodburning stove, with logs sourced from right here on the property. There’s no fridge, just a cool box, and the water comes from a cold tap in the little kitchen.
As The Guardian mentioned, there’s an eco toilet just outside the cabin – it’s revolutionary in design so there are no nasty smells and it’s straightforward to use. The private wash house they referenced is just a few minutes’ walk away and has a shower, flushing toilet, and laundry facilities if you need them.
Who Is This Vintage Caravan Holiday For?
If you’re looking for a vintage caravan stay that’s a bit more adventurous than the usual glamping experience, this is it. The Guardian noted that the Fishing Hut sleeps up to three people – there’s a small double bed (4ft wide, 6ft long) in the vintage caravan section, plus a single day bed in the cabin that doubles as a sofa. One thing to note: vintage caravans weren’t designed for people over 6ft tall, so you might need to duck a bit! But the new mattress is wonderfully comfy and snuggly.
It’s perfect for couples who want to properly disconnect, friends looking for something different, or anyone who fancies learning to cook on a wood-fired stove. We provide unlimited logs and all the cast iron pans and cooking implements you’ll need.
Book Your Vintage Caravan Stay
We’re so proud that The Guardian recognised what makes our Fishing Hut special. It really is a unique caravan holiday experience – half wilderness cabin, half vintage caravan, completely off-grid, and right on the riverbank in the beautiful Scottish Borders.
If you’re looking for a vintage caravan getaway that’s properly different from the usual glamping fare, we’d love to have you. Just be prepared to embrace the adventure – wood fires, river views, sheep for company, and all.
