Cool new mezzanine bedroom in The Bothy

8 Apr 2020

In February 2020, we reopened The Bothy after a speedy but transformative renovation project. We have added a cool new mezzanine bedroom which makes the cottage an even better space for singles, couples or for families to hide-away.  So, when the current travel restrictions are lifted, please come and stay!

The new mezzanine bedroom is up in the eaves of this former stable building. It’s really cosy and, at the same time, the glass balustrade gives a great sense of openness to the main living area below. We are so pleased with the exposed steel structure – it looks fantastic next to the glass.

Due to the current work and travel restrictions, we don’t have any professional photos yet. That means you’ll have to make do with the ones I took on my iPhone 😉

Flexible space, perfect for couples, families & groups

The new bedroom can be arranged with either a king bed or with twin beds which makes it really flexible for families and groups. The second bedroom provides another two single beds, and we also have a sofa bed if needed. We have already hosted couples, families and work colleagues in the space since we re-opened in February.

The Bothy looks out to our field of three friendly sheep. Views also extend over the mill pond, which is usually full of wild duck, and to the woodland and river beyond.

Thanks to our partners

We could not have completed this project without the support of the Scottish Borders Council and the LEADER funding team. The Bothy mezzanine extension is part of a wider programme of works at Dod Mill over the past 12 months – we’ll update in due course regarding transformations of the Kiln House,

We would also like to thank our wider team including:

  • Interior-designers Xanthe Weir and Rachel Richmond and their team at DecorAir. Rachel and Xanthe have worked over the past couple of years on the Dod Mill projects, including The Bothy.
  • Our architect, Hamish Hunter, and structural engineers Structural Design Consultants.
  • Our brilliant local contractors, T McLeish & Sons, as well as their sub-contractors, for working exceptionally hard to get this project finished on time.
  • Ian Young Joinery for finishing works in the final stages – Ian and his team always have outstanding attention to detail and have worked on most of the projects we’ve ever done at Dod Mill.

We did all of the painting ourselves this time – a Christmas holiday period very well spent!
